    Religious freedom in Islamic countries

    Author: Holger SCHEEL

Religious freedom in Islamic countries: a European perspective Holger SCHEEL Researcher at the University of Kiel In my presentation, I will attempt to give an overview of religious freedom in Islam, and then compare religious freedom in Islamic law with the rules of public international law, from a European perspective. The question arises as to whether the often asserted incompatibility between Islam and human rights is really founded (1). According to Western doctrine, Islam is sometimes perceived as a threat to human rights (2). Would a secular system be better suited to protecting human rights, and in particular religious freedom? And above all, is a secular system a necessary condition for ensuring compatibility between Muslim law and human rights?
